Die ehemalige britische Kolonie wurde am 4. Februar 1948 unabhängig. Seit 1972 trägt das ehemalige Ceylon seinen heutigen Namen: Demokratische Sozialistische Republik Sri Lanka. Seit 1978 hat Sri Lanka ein Präsidialsystem mit einem direkt vom Volk gewählten exekutiven Präsidenten, der eine große Machtfülle besitzt. Das Einkammerparlament mit 225 Sitzen geht aus allgemeinen Wahlen hervor. Die Justiz ist unabhängig.

 

Die Staatsverfassung seit 1987 hat dezentrale Elemente:
In 7 der 9 Provinzen werden Provinzräte und Regierungen mit einem Chief Minister gewählt. Diesem ist ein vom Präsidenten ernannter Gouverneur übergeordnet. Es existiert die Ebene der Kommunalverwaltung mit gewählten Stadt- und Gemeinderäten. Die amtierende links-orientierte Regierung verfolgt das Ziel einer von Furcht und Gewalt freien Gesellschaft unter Betonung von Menschenrechten, Meinungs- und Pressefreiheit, Bekämpfung von Armut und Korruption.

 

Außenpolitisch beteiligt sich Sri Lanka aktiv an den Bemühungen der Vereinten Nationen im Kampf gegen organisierte Kriminalität und Terrorismus.

Es hat als erstes Land der Welt die VN-Konvention gegen terroristische Bombenanschläge gezeichnet.
